R.M.S. Titanic was fifty-eight miles tot he northwest of the Carpathia, and Carpathia's maximum speed was about 14 knots. Captain Rostron estimated that he could make the trip in about four hours, but ended up making it in only three and a half, traveling at an atonishing 17 and 1/2 knots- a speed that the Carpathia would never agin achieve.
During the United States Senate hearing into the Titanic disaster, Captain Rostron was asked to writ out the orders he gave to prepare for Titanic's survivors.
